Autoimmunity : Failure of an organism to recognize its own constituent parts as ''self'', which allows an immune response against its own cells and tissues.
Immunodeficiency : Disorders are a group of disorders in which part of the immune system is missing or defective. Therefore, the body's ability to fight infections is impaired. Patient will have frequent infections that are generally more severe and last longer than usual.
Monoclonal Antibodies : Monospecific antibodies that are the same because they are made by identical immune cells that are all clones of a unique parent cell, in contrast to polyclonal antibodies which are made from several different immune cells.
Allergy : An immune response or reaction to substances that are usually not harmful.
Vaccine : A biological preparation that improves immunity to a particular disease. Typically contains an agent that resembles a disease-causing microorganism, and is often made from weakened or killed forms of the microbe, its toxins or one of its surface proteins.
Innate : Immunity that occurs naturally as a result of a person's genetic constitution or physiology and does not arise from a previous infection or vaccination.
Complement : System of plasma proteins that participates in a cascade of reactions, generating active components that allow pathogens and immune complexes to be destroyed and eliminated from the body. Part of the innate immune defense of the body and is also activated through the antibodies produced in an adaptive immune response.
Cognitive phase : Recognition of the antigen by the immune system
Activation phase : Receptors are exposed on the surface and proliferation (increase in number) of B-cells and they start differentiating
Effector phase : Antibody molecule is produced from the plasma cell and hopefully the antibodies get rid of the antigen
Lectin pathway : Type of cascade reaction, similar in structure to the classical complement pathway, in that, after activation, it proceeds through the action of C4 and C2 to produce activated complement proteins further down the cascade.
Alternative pathway : The activation of complement by direct contact with polysaccharides located on yeast cells, bacteria, or protozoa. It is a nonspecific immune response that does not rely on antibodies or T cells.
Angioedema : Rapid swelling of the dermis, subcutaneous tissue, mucosa and submucosal tissues. It is very similar to urticaria, but urticaria, commonly known as hives, occurs in the upper dermis.
Complement deficiency : An immunodeficiency of absent or suboptimal functioning of one of the complement system proteins.
Agammaglobulinemia : Disorder passed down through families in which a person has very low levels of protective immune system proteins called immunoglobulins.
SCID : Fatal in humans, B cells cannot function without help from T-cells. B cells are not directly affected by the defect, both humoral and cell-mediated immunity are lost. A phenotype that can result from any one of the several different genetic disorders. (use ABV)
ADA Deficiency : Located on chromosome 20. The disease is inherited as an autosomal recessive condition.
MHC class II Deficiency : Inherited as an autosomal recessive trait. Health problems show up early in infancy. Affected babies present the physician with a mild form of combined immunodeficiency as they have increased susceptibility to pyogenic and opportunistic infections.
Second Category of SCID : Defects consists of cytokine-mediated signals for lymphocyte maturation and proliferation.
Third Category of SCID : Consists of defects in the machinery for somatic gene rearrangement that assembles the immunoglobulin and T-cell receptor genes during lymphocyte development.
