9th century: creation of Great Moravia
10th century: the Czech lands became a part of the Holy Roman Empire. King Charles IV was crowned Holy Roman Emperor in 1355. His rule is known as “the Golden Age” of Czech history. He inspired the establishment of Charles University that was opened in 1349 and laid the first stone on Charles Bridge.
1415: Jan Hus was executed, the Hussite Wars followed.
1620: the Battle of White Mountain. Much of the Czech aristocracy left the country.
19th century: the revival of the Czech language and the Czech national consciousness.
28th October 1918: the country became independent from the Austro-Hungarian Empire, an independent Czechoslovakia was formed. Masaryk was the first President.
1939: Germany invaded Czechoslovakia, the 2nd World War began.
1948: the Communist Party took power.
1968: Russian invasion. The Soviet union and its main allies in the Warsaw Pact invaded the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic in order to stop Prague Spring political liberation reforms.
1989: the “Velvet Revolution” saw the end of communism. Václav Havel became the first president of a newly democratic Czechoslovakia.
1993: the separation of Czechoslovakia into the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
2004: Czech Republic became a full member of the European Union.
