Ecology Vocab Review
28
ecology:The study of how organisms relate to each other and their environment
biome:A major biotic community characterized by the dominant forms of plant life and the prevailing climate
community:A group of interdependent organisms inhabiting the same region and interacting with each other
environmentalstewardship:Taking responsibility for the care and management of the environment
environment:All the living and non-living things on earth and their interactions
sustainability:The ability of plant, animal and other living populations within a community to continue to reproduce and interact. Requires biodiversity.
biodiversity:The number of different types of living organisms within an ecosystem.
system:A group of individual parts that interact to produce behavior or accomplish a task as a whole that no individual component can do.
components:The parts of a system. None can reproduce the behavior of a system alone.
holistic:An approach taken by ecologists, where the entire system, including connections and interactions between parts, is emphasized.
ecosystem:A complex, self-regulating system where living things interact with each other and the abiotic environment
bioticfactors:Parts of an ecosystem that are living, such as animals, plants, fungi, bacteria, algae
abioticfactors:Parts of an ecosystem that are not living, such as rocks, air, water and characteristics like temperature, hours of sunlight, salinity.
species:A group of similar organisms who can reproduce with each other, and produce offspring which can reproduce.
population:A group of individuals of the same species who live in the same area.
habitat:The physical environment of an organism; where it lives.
community:Populations of different species that live and interact in the same area. does not include non-living things.
niche:The role of an organism within its ecosystem. For example, the role of an owl is to be active at night, hunting small animals, and nesting in tree cavities.
biome:A large geographical region that contains similar ecosystems, defined on land by their vegetation and climate.
terrestrial:Land based
aquatic:Water based
deciduousforest:A biome with trees that lose their leaves in the autumn such as maple and oak.
borealforest:Also known as taiga. A cool biome with trees that have cones and needles (evergreens) like spruce and fir.
tundra:A cold biome with no trees, only small shrubs, mosses, lichens and tough grasses abd wild flowers.
grasslands:A dry biome with few trees and many kinds of grasses and shrubs.
temperateconiferousforest:A moderate biome with plenty of precipitation, containing massive trees with cones and needles like douglas fir and sitka spruce. found in B.C.
atmosphere:The layer of gasses surrounding earth
lithosphere:Earth's solid outer layer
hydrosphere:All the water on earth
biosphere:The part of the planet that supports life, where the hydrosphere, atmosphere and lithosphere intersect.
