Tone : The mood of the poem
Diction : The choice of words and vocabulary the poet uses
Stanza : Lines arranged in groups
Free verse : Verse that has neither rhyme nor a very strong beat, but often has some kind of rhythm
Couplet : Two lines of a verse which rhyme
Rhyme : Repeated sound patterns at the end of lines which give a poem shape
Rhythm : The beat of the words which give a sense of flow and movement in a poem
Enjambment : Continuing a sentence beyond the end of a line
Connotation : The ideas that come to mind when you hear a word
Juxtaposition : When two words or images are places next to each other to emphasise a relationship between them
Ambiguity : A word or phrase with more than one meaning
Content : What the poem says and means
Form : How the poem is presented on the page
Theme : The message of the poem. What the poet wants us to think about
Symbol : A thing that stands for something else e.g. dove= peace
Imagery : Writing that creates a picture in our minds
Simile : A way of describing something using comparison
Metaphor : Describing something some thing as if it were a different thing
Extended Metaphor : A comparison that is extended through the whole poem
Alliteration : A series of words beginning with the same letter
Sibilance : Like a tongue twister but the repetition of 'ss'
Repetition : Repeating a sound, a word, a phrase, a stanza for effect
Onomatopoeia : A word where the sound echoes the meaning
Personification : Where something is given human features
Irony : A way in writing something that is contrary to what the words appear to say
