SADDLE : The casting that fits onto the top of the bed and slides along.
APRON : The vertical, often flat and rectangular "plate" fastened to the front of the Saddle.
LATHEBED : Provides the foundation for the whole machine and holds the headstock, tailstock and carriage in alignment.
TOOLPOST : The rigid holding device which holds the cutting tool on a lathe and some other machine tools.
HEADSTOCK : A nonmoving part of a machine or power tool that supports a revolving part, such as the spindle of a lathe.
TAILSTOCK : The movable part of a lathe that supports the dead center.
LEADSCREW : A threaded rod that drives the tool carriage in a lathe when screw cutting.
CROSSSLIDE : A part of a machine tool that allows the tool carriage to move at right angles to the main direction of travel.
COMPOUNDSLIDE : Offers a way to turn tapers and cut angles on a lathe without rotating the headstock.
SPINDLE : A rotating shaft in a disk drive. In a fixed disk, the platters are attached to the spindle. In a removable disk, the spindle remains in the drive. Laptops use spindle designations to indicate the number of built-in drives. For example, a two-spindle machine contains a hard drive and a second bay for an optical drive.
