atom: the smallest particle that has the properties of an element
nucleus: the center of an atom; made up of protons and neutrons
proton: a positively charged subatomic particle in the nucleus of an atom
neutron: a neutral subatomic particle in the nucleus of an atom
electron: a negatively charged subatomic particle found in the energy level of an atom
energy level: any of the possible energies an electron may have in an atom
valance electron: an electron in the outermost energy level of an atom
period: a horizontal row of elements in the periodic table
group: a vertical column of elements in the periodic table
ion: an atom or a group of atoms that has lost or gained one or more electrons and therefore has a net electric charge
cation: an ion with a positive chage
anion: an ion with a negative charge
atomic number: the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom
mass number: the total number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom
isotopes: any atoms having the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons
average atomic mass: the weighted average of the masses of all naturally occuring isotopes of an elementmetal
metal: the elements that are good conductors of heat and electricity
nonmetal: the elemnts that are usually poor conductors of heat and electricity
metalloid: an element that has properties of both a metal and nonmetal
family: another name for group
