Force and Motion
20
Force: Any action that changes the shape or the movement of an object.
Acceleration:A change in velocity
Friction:The force that slows down objects when they rub against each other.
Speed:The rate at which something moves.
Velocity:Speed and direction.
Newton:The SI unit of measurement for a force
Balanced forces: A set of forces that cancel one another so that there is no overall force on an object.
Unbalanced forces: A set of forces acting on an object that do not cancel one another out.
Net force:The combination of all the forces acting on the object.
Force: A push or pull
Reference Point: A place or object to which another location is compared
Motion: An object's change in position
Instantaneous speed: speed of an object at a specific instant in time
Position:location of an object.
Vector: A physical quantity that has both size and direction.
Inertia: the tendency of an object to resist a change in motion.
Mass and acceleration: Two factors to find force
Action and reaction: Newton's third law
Gravity:The force that pulls things down toward the surface of the Earth and keeps them from floating away into space.
Displacement: the straight line distance between a starting point and an end point.
