Chapter 5 Vocabulary
12
Population Density : Refers to the number of individuals per unit area.
Age Structure: The number of males and females of each age a population contains.
Immigration : A process where individuals move into a population.
Emigration : A process where individuals move out of a population.
Exponential Growth : The situation where the size of each generation of offspring will be larger than the generation before it.
Logistic Growth : Occurs when a population's growth slows and then stops, following a period of exponential growth.
Carrying Capacity: The maximum number of individuals of a particular species that a particular environment can support.
Limiting Factor : A factor that controls the growth of the population.
Density dependent limiting factors : Operates strongly when the number of organisms per unit area reaches a certain level.
Density independent limiting factors : Affects all populations in similar way regardless of population size and density.
Demography: The study of human populations.
Demographic transition : A dramatic change from high birth rates and death rates to low birth rates and death rates.
