Bones Under the Microscope!
12
Compact: The smooth hard type of bone you see when you look at the skeleton
Periosteum: The dense layer that protects the outside of the bone and contains blood vessels and nerves
Osteons: The tubes which make up our compact bone and can be seen under the microscope.
Cancellous: The spongy bone seen inside the compact bone, which protects the marrow cavity.
Nerves: Allow our bones to feel pain and are found in the periosteum and inside the osteon.
Blood vessels: These bring nutrients to our bone tissue and carry waste away (2- words).
Calcium: This mineral is important for keeping our bones hard and strong.
Osteoporosis: This disease causes little pores to form in the bones and the bones become brittle
Remodelled: Bone are constantly being ____________. So that in 7-10 years your skeleton has been completely regenerated.
Osteoclasts: The large cells move along the surface of the bone and dissolve the minerals in the bone during remodelling.
Osteoblasts: The cells that produce early bone tissue, called osteoid.
Osteocytes: These cells become trapped within the bone matrix and communicate with each other through tiny canals called canaliculi.
