Periosteum: a tight fitting membrane around bones that contain blood vessels
Cartilage: firm, whitish, flexible connective tissue found in the nose, ears, etc.
Joint: a point at which parts of an artificial structure are joined.
Ligament: a short band of tough, flexible, fibrous connective tissue that connects two bones or cartilages or holds together a joint.
Movable Joint: A joint in which the opposing bony surfaces are covered with a layer of hyaline cartilage or fibrocartilage
Immovable Joint: A union of two bones by fibrous tissue
Synovial Fluid: A transparent lubricating fluid secreted in a sac to protect an area where a tendon passes over a bone.
Compact Bone: hard, dense bone that is usually found at the periphery of skeletal structures
Spongy Bone: Bone in which the spicules form a latticework, with interstices filled with embryonic connective tissue or bone marrow.
Osteoclasts: a large multinucleate bone cell that absorbs bone tissue during growth and healing; breaks the bone down.
Osteoblasts: a cell that secretes the matrix for bone formation; builds the bone up.
