Matter by Savannah Schnepf
14
Element:substance that cannot be broken down into any other substance by chemical or physical means
Atom:the smallest unit of an element ALL matter is made up of atoms they are the basic building blocks of matter
Proton:a very small particle inside an atom's nucleus or central core it has a positive electrical charge
Neutron:a small particle inside an atom's nucleus that's not electrically charged
Electron:found outside the nucleus it's a small negatively charged particle that moves around the outer sphere of an atom
Molecule:a group of 2 or more atoms held together by a chemical bond
Compounds:substances made of 2 or more elements that combine chemically in a set ratio
Reactant:substances that undergo a chemical change
Products: the new substance that forms from a chemical change
Chemical formula: represent compounds
Chemical bond: an electrical force of attraction between 2 atoms it holds one atom to another these bonds form when an atom shares electron with another atom or when electrons are transferred from one atom to another
Physical changes: any change that alters the form or appearance of a substance but doesn't change it to another substance
Chemical change: change in matter that produces one or more new substances also called a chemical reaction
Coefficient: a number placed in front of a chemical formula in an equation it tells you the amount of a reactant or product in the reaction
Chemical equation: a way to show a chemical reaction using symbols instead of words it tells you the reactants or substances you start with in a reaction and the products or new substances that are formed at the end
