Unit 5 Vocabulary
19
Composition: The makeup of a rock; describes either the minerals or elements present in it
Continental Drift: The theory that continents can drift apart from one another and have done so in the past
Convection: The transfer of thermal energy by the circulation or movement of liqiud or a gas
Convergent Boundary: The boundary between two colliding tectonic plates
Core: The central, spherical part of the Earth below the mantle
Crust: The thin, outermost layer of the Earth, or the uppermost part of the lithosphere
Density: The amount of matter in a given space; mass per unit volume
Divergent Boundary: The boundary between two tectonic plates that are moving away from each other
Earthquake: A shaking or trembling of a portion of the Earth
Fault: A break in the Earth's crust along which blocks of the crust slide relative to one another due to tectontic forces
Lava: Magma that flows onto the Earth's surface
Lithosphere: The outermost, rigid layer of the Earth that consists of the crust and rigid upper part of the mantle
Magma: The hot liquid that forms when rock partially or completely melts; may include mineral crystals
Mantle: The layer of the Earth between the crust and the core
Plate Tectonics: The theory that the Earth's lithosphere is divided into tectonic plates that move around on top of the asthenosphere and mantle
Subduction: The region where an oceanic plate sinks down into the asthenosphere at a convergent boundary, usually
between continental and oceanic plates
Transform Boundary: The boundary between two tectonic plates that are sliding past each other horizontally
Uplift: An act, process, or result of lifing up a part of the Earth's surface
Volcano: A mountain that forms when molten rock, called magma, is forced to the Earth's surface
