The Atmosphere
17
Weather : the condition of Earth's atmosphere at a particular time and place
Atmosphere : the envelope of gases that surrounds our planet
Ozone : a form of oxygen that has 3 atoms in each molecule instead of 2
Water vapor : water in the form of gas
Density : the amount of mass in a given volume of air
Pressure : the force pushing on an area of surface
Air Pressure : the weight of a column pushing down on an area
Barometer : an instrument used to measure air pressure
Mercury Barometer : measures the change in air pressure, consisting of a glass tube resting in a dish of Mercury
Aneroid Barometer : measures the change in air pressure without using a liquid
Altitude : the distance above sea level, the average level of the surface of the oceans
Troposphere : the layer where living things can breath in oxygen, and where Earth's weather occurs
Stratosphere : the second layer that contains the ozone layer
Mesosphere : the middle layer of the atmosphere
Thermosphere : the top layer that is divided into two layers
Ionosphere : the lower layer of the thermosphere
Exosphere : the top layer of the thermosphere and is the outer portion of the atmosphere
