Element: the periodic table of
Atom: the smallest particle that has the properties of an element
Atomic number: (this is the definition) the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom.
Atomic mass: (this is the definition) the mass of an atom of a chemical element.
Proton: a positively charged subatomic particle in the nucleus of an atom
Neutron: a neutral subatomic particle in the nucleus of an atom
Electron: a negatively charged subatomic particle found in the energy level of an atom
Valence electron: (this is the definition) an electron of an atom, located in the outermost shell (valence shell) of the atom.
Nucleus: the center of an atom; made up of protons and neutrons
Energy level: any of the possible energies an electron may have in an atom
Orbital: a region in an atom where there is a high probability of finding electrons
Periodic law: the properties of elements tend to repeat in a regular pattern when elements are arranged in order of increasing atomic number
Group: a vertical column of elements in the periodic table
Ionization: the process of adding electrons to or removing electrons from an atom or group of atoms
Ion: an atom or a group of atoms that has lost or gained one or more electrons and therefore has a net electric charge
Cation: an ion with a positive charge
Anion: an ion with a negative charge
Mass number: the total number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom
Isotopes: any atoms having the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons
Amu: symbol for atomic mass unit
Metalloid: an element that has properties of both a metal and nonmetal
