Genetic Variations
14
Genetic Variation : can be expressed differently based on whether they are dominant or recessive
chromosomes : DNA is packaged together into structures
homologous : chromosome pair where you get one from your mom and one from your dad.
fertilization : after the end result of meiosis of which 4 different daughter cells that have ½ the number of chromosomes this occurs and produces offspring that have two versions of every gene
Environmental : conditions can cause mutations, these conditions are called mutagens
Spontaneous : random errors are made during DNA replication and cell division
Insertion : adds an extra base
Deletion : removes a base
Substitutions : replace one base with another one
mutations : permanent changes in the DNA of a cell and can have positive, negative or neutral effects
Allele : variations of a gene
Genotype : The allele pairs an organism has
Phenotype : The observable characteristics an organism has.
crossing over : important step for variation because genes on chromosomes can be swapped
