Tidal volume: volume of air entering or leaving the lungs in a single breath
Inspiratory Reserve Volume: air that can be inspired over and above the tidal volume
Expiratory Reserve Volume: air that can be expired after a normal expiration
Residual Volume: air remaining in the lungs after maximal expiration
Vital Capacity: greatest amount of air that can be breathed out in one exhalation
eupnea: normal breathing
hyperventilation: rapid and deep respirations
hypoventilation: slow and shallow respirations
dyspena: laboured or difficult respirations
apnea: stopped respiration
respiratory arrest: failure to resume breathing after a period of apnea
