Biological : This function of the family is related to the reproduction of the human species.
Social : This function is concerned with the fact that the family teaches us different skills and disciplines which are so important to become active members in our society. In our families we are taught and learn acceptable patterns of behaviour. In our families we first learn the values of honesty, kindness, hardworking, good manners etc.. We also learn to be helpful by doing chores and when we become adolescents we learn to work.
Emotional : This function of the family is concerned with the fact that the family provides an island of love, affection and security for its members.
Cultural : This function of the family is concerned with transmission of traditions, way of life, customs and beliefs from one generation to another.
Economic : This function of the family is concerned with the fact that parents bring money or goods into the family to satisfy the basic needs of food, clothing and shelter.
Educational : this function of the family is concerned with the fact that it is in the family that we learn to say our first few words, we learn to walk, talk, toilet training etc. Parents contribute to the informal way of teaching their children. They may supervise child's homework, give encouragement and advise and offer assistance where necessary.
