Chapter 12 Crossword
25
Weathering: The breakup of rock due to exposure to processes
Mechanical weathering: Rock material is broken up into smaller pieces without changing form or composition.
Chemical weathering: takes place when rock’s minerals are changed into different substances.
Frost wedging: Process of rocks being broken up as water expands
Abrasion: Type of weathering caused by sand, pebbles, and rocks moving across one another and wearing away material
Exfoliation: Peeling of surface layers from exposed bedrock. Forms rounded peaks called exfoliation domes.
Hydrolysis: the chemical weathering by reaction of water with other substances
Acid rain: Rainwater that contains unusually high amount of acids that can be traced back to pollution
Oxidation: Chemical reaction of oxygen with other substances.
Soil loose: weathered rock and organic material
Parent material: Rock or material from which soil is formed.
Residual soil: Soil whose parent material is the bedrock located beneath the soil
Transported soil: Soil formed from material that has been moved by wind, rivers and ice to another area.
Soil profile: Cross section of soil layers that displays all soil horizons.
Soil Horizon: A soil layer with physical and chemical properties that differ from touching layers.
Topsoil: The top layer, A-horizon, of soil: contains organic material, or humus, that forms from decayed plant and animal materials.
Subsoil: The 2nd layer, B-Horizon, of soil: contains clay and iron oxides washed from the topsoil.
Define mass movement: Downward transportation of weathered materials by gravity.
Define erosion: Removal and transport of materials by natural agents such as wind and running water.
Talus: Rock fragments that have been weathered from a cliff and pulled down by gravity.
Landslide: The movement of a mass of bedrock or loose soil and rock down the slope of a hill, mountain, or cliff.
Creep: Slow unnoticeable movement of soil down a slope. Causes objects imbedded in the soil to lean downhill.
Slump: Blocks of land tilt and move downhill along a surface that curves into the slope. Occur because slope has become too steep to support the soil at top.
Earth flows: A mass of weathered material, that has been soaked with water, flows downhill.
Mudflow: Rapid movement of water that contains large amounts of clay and silt (mud). Can carry rocks, boulders, trees, and houses.
Volcanic Neck: The solidified lava filled the center vent of an extinct volcano.
Soil: fertility is the ability of soil to grow plants.
Soil Depletion: Nutrients are removed from the soil as crops are harvested.
Salinization: A process in which water is evaporated into the air leaving behind the minerals that were dissolved in the water. Eventually so much mineral matter is left in soil that it can no longer sustain crops.
