real numbers: set of rational numbers together with the set of irrational numbers (all numbers)
irrational numbers: a number that cannot be expressed as a/b, where a and b are integers and b is not equal to 0 (pi)
rational numbers: a number of the form a/b, where a and b are intergers and b is not equal to 0
integers: the set of whole numbers and their opposites (...-2,-1,0,1,2,...)
whole numbers: natural numbers, plus 0 (0,1,2,3,4,...)
natural numbers: counting numbers (1,2,3,4,....)
radical: symbol used to indicate a square root
radicand: the quantity under a radical sign
square root: one of the two equal factors of a number
perfect square: a rational number whose square root is a whole number
cube root: a number that can be raised to the third power to create another number
terminating decimal:a decimal whose digits end
repeating decimal: a decimal whose digits repeat in groups of one or more
truncate: to shorten, or cut off a number (1.2345 to 1.2)
